Brightlands Science Lecture by Professor Kim Ragaert

In plastics recycling, ‘quality’ is high on everybody’s list, but techno-scientific methods to either quantify or predict this quality are lacking. Furthermore, it is known that post-consumer recycled plastics are typically cross-contaminated with small percentages of other polymers or with other components like adhesives or barrier layers.

However, the exact effect of such contaminations on recyclate quality remains fuzzy. Using fundamentals from polymer materials science, prof. Ragaert will guide us through the development of her Recycling Quality model. Via the concept of substitutability, this technical quality can then be translated into the LCA domain as well.
