Burgert Blom (B.)
My research interests combine elements of classical organometallic chemistry and modern main group chemistry, in particular the development of highly reactive molecules containing transition metal to heavy main group element (particularly Si, Ge, Sn) bonds with a view of exploiting them for small molecule bond activation reactions and catalysis. The metals under investigation include d- and f-block element metals. In addition I have a secondary interest in bio-inorganic chemistry, in particular the synthesis of biomimetic models of some key enzymes, such a hydrogenase. Exploits into stable organometallic complexes which could be of therapeutic value are also under consideration. Students perusing thesis research gain valuable experience using modern spectroscopic techniques, and working under inert conditions, and the isolation of exciting new complexes, which represent new materials, novel catalysis and even possible therapeutic agents
Students interested in thesis research under my supervision can contact me directly for an array of exciting projects on offer.
Key concepts:
- Low valent group 14 element chemistry (Si - Pb)
- f-block (Lanthanoid) chemistry
- Organometallic chemistry
- Exploiting reactive transition metal - main group element bonds for catalysis and small molecule bond activation
- Catalysis
- Organometallic compounds as agents for therapy
Currently exploring Arene Ru(II) complexes as potential cytotoxic agents. Looking at increasing bioavailability by building in hydrophilic groups. Collaborating with several groups in Austria, Cape Town, and Switzerland.
