… op axiale spondyloartritis (axSpA), een ontstekingsziekte van met name de wervelkolom en het bekken. De ziekte van Bechterew is de bekendste vorm is van axSpA. De verschillende uitkomsten van axSpA zijn onderzocht, die relevant zijn voor zowel de individuele patiënt als de maatschappij. Gezien werd dat mannen meer schade aan de rug ontwikkelen, terwijl vrouwen een slechtere kwaliteit van leven ervaren. Daarnaast blijkt dat depressieve klachten regelmatig vóórkomen bij patiënten met axSpA, maar dat goed behandelen van axSpA ook deze depressieve klachten vermindert. Ook werd aangetoond dat patiënten minder vaak betaald werk hebben dan de algemene bevolking, ondanks de beschikbaarheid van effectieve behandelingen, en dat ze zich regelmatig moeten ziekmelden van hun werk vanwege hun ziekte. Een ziekmelding door axSpA blijkt bovendien voorspellend voor toekomstige ziekmelding, en is dus een soort waarschuwingssignaal. Ten slotte … voor het volledige proefschrift.
