Success in the VAR-moot court competition
Sweeping success for our faculty in the VAR-moot court competition!
On Wednesday, May 22, the team of Maastricht university faculty of law – consisting of Ruben Peetam, Isabel Bandsma, Steven Debie and Youri Quaedvlieg – won the prestigious VAR moot court competition! The VAR moot court competition is organized annually by the Dutch Administrative Law Association (VAR) and took place this year at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). The competition consists of two written rounds in which the students have to crawl once into the role of claimants and once into the role of respondents. The written rounds are followed by oral pleading sessions during the moot court day. The Maastricht team received laudatory reviews for both their written and oral performances. They even reached the maximum score on certain sections! This was certainly not evident, as the well-thought-out case required the students to dive deep into the toolbox of administrative (procedural) law and explore several special parts of Dutch administrative law. Moreover, the jury consisted of very experienced judges and attorneys. Admirable is how the students managed - with only very limited preparation time - to argue an exciting final case against the team from the Radboud University Nijmegen. The Maastricht victory was already celebrated on Wednesday and will have a sequel: on Friday, May 24, the students will be honored during the annual meeting of the VAR.
Special thanks must be given to the Limburg District Court, location Roermond, where the students practiced competitively in front of Judge Fabian van de Ven.
The supervision team included Bob Assink, Sam Schuite, Raymond Schlössels and Sander Janssen. The supervisors are proud of 'their' students and that the trophy goes along to Maastricht!
