Maastricht University at TEFAF
From 9 to 14 March, The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) will take place in Maastricht. Some 270 galleries from more than 20 countries will showcase prestigious works of art.
TEFAF is not only visited by art dealers from all over the world, but also has a magnetic attraction for art lovers, academics and students who have an interest in the artworks on display as well as the art world.
Maastricht University (UM) is organising the following events at this year's TEFAF:
Curator’s course
For the first time, UM and TEFAF organise the ‘Curator’s course’. The programme, designed by Rachel Pownall (UM) and Paul van den Biesen (TEFAF) brings together the academic world and the art market. It offers an exceptional opportunity for (emerging) museum curators and directors to gain expertise, insights, and networking. The course, in collaboration with Maastricht University, is a unique chance for participants to learn from seasoned international colleagues, members of the TEFAF Vetting community, and renowned art dealers who are experts in their specialized fields.Professor Lars van Viet and Dr Donna Yates from the Law Faculty are giving guest lectures.

TEFAF is honored to present the inaugural TEFAF Summit: an annual event hosted at TEFAF Maastricht in association with the Netherlands Commission for UNESCO. This distinguished event will delve into the theme of cultural heritage and its challenges with prominent thought leaders, experts, and influential stakeholders from the fields of cultural heritage, art, academia, government, and more.

On Monday 11 March (17.00 – 19.00) Rachel Pownall welcomes the current students of the Executive Master in Cultural Leadership. Co-director of the programme, Dr. Marie Tavinor from the Royal Academy of Arts in London, will also be there. Studium Generale is organising a lecture entitled: "Making Art and Making Money: The Creation of the Modern Art Market, ca. 1550-today". Speaker Jan-Dirk Baetens takes you on a trip through the history of the modern art market and explores the way in which clever dealers, cunning agents and artists with a nose for business paved the way for today’s glittering art fairs, sensational auction records and globalised art market.
