2021 Highlights

In September we also hosted a group of researchers who met in the framework of the NanoBubbles project, which aims to explore the ways erroneous claims can be removed from the scientific record. To understand how the correction of science works or fails, the NanoBubbles project combines approaches from the natural sciences, engineering (natural language processing) and humanities and social sciences (linguistics, sociology, philosophy and history of science).

In October we recorded another episode for our podcast 'Stories from Brussels'. This time we had the pleasure of hearing from Hylke Dijkstra, Associate Professor and the Director of the Research Program Politics and Culture in Europe at UM; Francesca Colli, Assistant Professor in European Politics at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UM and Alvaro Oleart, Postdoctoral researcher at Maastricht University, Studio Europa and Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The discussion was moderated by Associate Director of UM Campus Brussels, Associate Professor Paul Stephenson. 

We asked them about their paths into academia, the projects they are currently working on, and about their favourite places in Brussels.

PREMSTEM is a stem cell regeneration research network of world leading clinicians, researchers, stakeholder advocacy groups and an industrial partner with well-established experience in neonatology and drug development. PREMSTEM is focused on delivering to the clinic a novel regenerative therapy to reduce the enormous emotional, health and economic implications of neurodevelopmental injury caused by encephalopathy of prematurity – brain damage associated with premature birth.

We had the pleasure of hosting the annual meeting of the PREMSTEM research team.

On 22nd October 2021 we hosted a hybrid workshop "Intertwining Criminal Justice and Immigration Control in the EU: Theoretical, Interdisciplinary, and Practical Perspectives" organised by GLaw-Net Research Network, the Maastricht Centre for European Law, and the Faculty of Law of Queen Mary University of London. 

The workshop explored the theoretical, normative, and philosophical underpinnings of EU and national policies intertwining criminal and migration law, as well as their practical use (and abuse) and impact on the protection of fundamental rights of migrants and the rule of law.  

In October we held an online session for everyone from Maastricht University who was interested to find out more about our Campus, meet the team, hear from the Directors and have a virtual tour of the building. Students, staff, and researchers joined to follow the session and ask their questions. 

JOINT is a project aimed at assessing challenges to a more joined-up foreign and security policy of the EU. It is an interdisciplinary project involving 14 partners from 12 countries, which investigates how to make EU foreign and security policy governance structures more joined-up and sustainable in a rapidly changing and contested international environment. 

The Campus hosted  a workshop organised by JOINT project on the topic of 'The Context of EU Foreign and Security Policy: Internal Contestation, Regional Fragmentation and Multipolar Competition'. The event was held in a hybrid format.
