Carlos David Fuentes has won the European Cartoon Award for the best political cartoon about Europe of the past year. The prize, which carries a cash reward of 10,000 euros, was presented by RTL reporter Olaf Koens at a special ceremony held in the auditorium at UM headquarters at Minderbroedersberg on 10 September 2022.

The European Cartoon Award was established three years ago by Studio Europa Maastricht and the European Press Prize. The prize is given in recognition of courage and quality in cartooning and is intended to encourage discussion about Europe and European integration.

As a prelude to the announcement, the jury members dwelt on the polarised political climate in Europe, and how cartoonists relate to this. They stressed the importance of cartoons like the one by winner Carlos David Fuentes that show us the news affecting us all in an original way. The presentation of the European Cartoon Award took place on the second day of the eighth edition of the Pleasure, Art & Science Festival (PAS).

The Cuban winner reacted on Facebook: "European Cartoon Award 2022. One of the best things that has happened to me in my career. A cartoon I made in the hope that it would be published in the international press, which saw the light of day in #thecartoonmovevent and then in #courrierinternational. And as if that wasn't enough, now this important award. God bless Ukraine! Long live free Cuba!"
