Semifinal place for UM Law team in PAX Moot Court International Competition
Maastricht University Faculty of Law this year took part for the first time on the PAX Moot Court International Competition. Our team was represented by four 2nd year ELS students (Charlotte Holderied, Marc Pallisó, Anna Schramm and Laura Zsarnai) who did a fantastic job. The competition went totally online this year, including the oral rounds that were hosted on a teaching platform hosted by the University of Antwerp. The Maastricht University team worked hard on the written submissions in adverse conditions when the COVID-19 restrictions were put in place and, other than many other participants, decided to go ahead with this project despite all odds.

After four solid pleading performances in the preliminary rounds, Charlotte, Marc, Anna and Laura secured a place in the semifinals, together with the Universities of Cologne, Erasmus Rotterdam and Singapore Management University. The team did not manage to reach the finals, that was eventually won by the University of Cologne but looks back at a very successful participation in this exciting international competition.
The Pax Moot Court Competition is an international mooting competition focused on (uniform) private international law. In this competition, students learn how to operate with EU regulations and international treaties that apply across different jurisdictions and should ideally receive a uniform interpretation. This year, the case concerned an employment dispute and environmental damage due to mining in an unidentified African country (Almasi) that raised various issues of jurisdiction, applicable law, the effects of foreign freezing orders, parallel proceedings and company structures.
