Digital Single Market Ecosystem: Innovation, a seamless digital market, and stakeholder rights and interests - How do they work together?

A seminar for policymakers and implementers by the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC) at Maastricht University and The Information Accountability Foundation (IAF).

The EU Commission says “A Digital Single Market (DSM) is one in which the free movement of persons, services and capital is ensured and where the individuals and businesses can seamlessly access and exercise online activities under conditions of fair competition, and a high level of consumer and personal data protection, irrespective of their nationality or place of residence.”  One strategy for achieving a Digital Single Market is the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation.  But how does data protection work with innovative data use to create ground breaking data driven value for all stakeholders?  To inform the policy discussion, one needs a granular knowledge of how a digital market operates, the innovations already changing this digital market, and how they impact the full range of all stakeholders’ interests. This session will contribute to that knowledge base.

The topics to be covered:

  • The economics of the linkage of a Digital Single Market and that enhances full range of stakeholder interests
  • The digital market engine:  identifying, defining and placing into context the critical digital technologies that create, use, and exchange the data that create the DSM and impact people
  • How a risk based approach that considers not only risk but also considers societal and individual benefits balances the risk to privacy and the reticence risk from not using data

The faculty will be led by scholars from the University and the IAF.

Participation is free of charge. A limited number of seats is available.
