Maastricht: Guided tour ENCI quarry

Alumni are invited to join a guided tour around the ENCI site

Are you curious to know what is happening in/around the ENCI site? What historical and archaeological impact does this have on our city and surroundings? On September 23, a guided tour will take place in the ENCI quarry and the “Schark Grot” (both Dutch and English language guides). Afterwards, we will have a networking drink in Chalet D’n Observant.

Program
- 14:00 to 17:00: guided tour from the Chalet D’n Observant, Lage Kanaaldijk 115 (alumni free of charge and guests 10 euro p.p.)
- 17:00: network drink at own expense at Chalet D’n Observant

Tour ENCI Groeve and the Schark Grot
Visit the ENCI site and Groeve de Schark where many topics will be shared; Industry, geology, architecture, history, and the transformation of industry into a unique nature area for the Netherlands.

The tour will cover the entire ENCI site. You will be accompanied by a former cement factory employee who will take you on a tour of the business area where some beautiful monumental buildings, including those of architect Peutz, can be seen. After this we will visit the quarry which is world famous because of the visible formations of 'Maastrichts Krijt' and the recent discoveries of Mosasaurs. From there we will visit the mergel cave “Schark”. This impressive war memorial tells the story of hundreds of American soldiers who bivouacked there on Christmas night of 1944 during World War II.

In short, a fascinating, versatile tour where a former ENCI employee takes you on a journey through time!

You can register for this event via our UM Alumni Portal.
