“Pregnancy derived products for treatment of perinatal brain injuries”

In this thesis potential treatment options to reduce the burden of brain injuries to immature infants were investigated.  Müller investigated the feasibility and protective capacity of pregnancy derived products such as: stem calls: Wharton`s Jelly derived MSCs (WJ-MSCs), 17β-Estradiol supplementation, and synthetic PreImplantation Factor (sPIF) in the context of translational research. It was discovered that these products protect the immature brain after injury in animal models. Multiple novel mechanisms were discovered. These results represent an important step towards tackling perinatal brain injuries, a disease which have been currently unmet. Importantly, clinical trials can be envisioned.
