Countrymen: The Escape of the Danish Jews in October 1943

The escape of the Danish Jews from the Nazi persecution in October 1943 is a compelling story. It confirms that Denmark was a unique exception from the dismal history of the Holocaust.

Lidegaard protrait

What made Denmark exceptional? And how can the very different developments in occupied countries such as the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark be explained?

In this lecture, Bo Lidegaard will draw on his recent book, Countrymen. He will seek to explain and discuss what made the escape of the Danish Jews possible. The lecture will start by looking at the internal factors that changed the dynamics between the Nazi occupying power, the Danish Jews and the surrounding society, and go on to draw comparisons with the Holocaust experience of the Netherlands and Norway.
