After a serious accident, paramedics place patients with suspected spinal injuries on a hard and uncomfortable board known as a spinal board. This dissertation compared the traditional spinal board to one with an integrated mattress. The latter proved to have fewer negative side effects than the former. It was also perceived as more comfortable, with the same ability to take high-quality X-rays and CT scans. This study not only provided an easy-to-use and patient-friendly product, it also revealed new insights about the development of pressure ulcers.
