Eerder werd deze lezing aangekondigd als lezing over zware sterren. Titel en omschrijving zijn aangepast. Een klein deel van de sterren sterft in een supernova-explosie. In de laatste 1000 jaar zijn er vier van deze ontploffingen geweest in het deel van de Melkweg waar wij wonen, gebeurtenissen die met het blote oog te zien waren. De rode superreus Betelgeuse, één van de helderste sterren, in het sterrenbeeld Orion, is kandidaat voor de volgende supernova.

A panel with different speakers from the Law Faculty of Maastricht University will dive into different aspects of International Law in relation to Israel-Palestine. The panel addresses criteria of statehood, the right of self-determination, the law of armed conflicts and humanitarian law. The panel looks at mandates and resolutions and their effects and especially at the role of the UN and the International Court of Justice.

Veel oorlogen en bezettingen gaan gepaard met plunderingen van cultureel erfgoed, waaronder kunstvoorwerpen. Zo zijn tijdens het nazibewind op grote schaal kunstvoorwerpen geroofd. In zijn lezing zal Van Vliet ingaan op het Nederlandse beleid ten aanzien van restitutie, procedures aangespannen in de Verenigde Staten, en het debat over teruggave van voorwerpen die in eerdere perioden zijn geroofd of weggehaald, bijvoorbeeld uit voormalige koloniën.

Op deze multidisciplinaire avond worden we door de performers Junadry Leocaria, Gregory Shaggy Albertzoon, Laurindo Andrea en Adeiye Tjon meegenomen naar Curaçao. Zij onderzoeken met hun dans en spoken-word hoe taal als instrument is ingezet om verdeeldheid systematisch voort te zetten, evenals hoe dit doorwerkt in toegang tot sociale posities en colorisme. Zij gaan in gesprek over de blijvende veerkracht die getraceerd kan worden in verhalen van heldendaden om deze gezamenlijk te voelen en tot ons te nemen.

Our guest is a human rights defender who works on capacity building of human rights organisations in their country, promotion of civic and political rights, and protection of civic space. In doing so, they face a lot of obstacles in their work, from discriminatory laws and surveillance. During the lecture, our guest discusses the history of their country and tells how democracy came under pressure. They also talk about what their work as a human rights defender is like.
