Catarina Marques dos Santos (C.)

My research focuses on understanding team dynamics and the temporal aspects of teamwork. I use a combination of field, experimental, and observational research to investigate ways to help team members and leaders foster a shared understanding regarding key aspects of their work (i.e., a team mental model), collaborate, adapt to unexpected events, and effectively perform their tasks. My most recent projects focus on human-AI collaboration, in particular on the implications of Generative AI (such as ChatGPT) for the educational system and organizational contexts. With my research, I contribute to theorizing and equipping team members and leaders with strategies that make teams more successful.

I also provide training sessions for organizational teams in diverse sectors, helping them to establish clear objectives and a shared mindset, manage diversity and conflicts, and lead crises.

My research has been published in top journals in the field of applied psychology, organizational psychology, management, and leadership, including The Leadership Quarterly, Group & Organization Management, European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Business Research, and Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. I have been awarded research grants, including a prestigious Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship.

I serve as Associate Editor at Team Performance Management. I co-edited a special issue on team virtuality in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. I have co-organized several international conferences including INGRoup, EAWOP Small Group Meetings, and the European Conference on Psychological Assessment.

At Maastricht University, I teach and coordinate courses at the Bachelor, Master, and MBA levels. I also supervise theses and projects at all levels (BSc, MSc, PhD, and MBA). I serve as the Programme Leader for the Master in International Business – specialization in Organisation: Management, Change and Consultancy. I also serve as a member of the University Fund Limburg/SWOL's grants committee.

Before joining Maastricht University, I was a post-doctoral researcher at ISCTE-IUL (Lisbon, Portugal) and a visiting assistant professor at ISCTE-IUL and Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. I hold a double Ph.D. degree (2016) from the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience of Maastricht University and ISCTE-IUL.
